Summary of TDWG Working Session 2025

All recordings of the working sessions will be available on TDWG Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/@tdwg

Environmental Samples and eDNA Task Group

  • Objective: Consolidating the GGBN Data Standard, MIxS as well as the latest GBIF guide to publish DNA derived data in order to develop a data standard and best practice usage guide for sharing eDNA data.
  • New TG, this is the first meeting. Meeting frequency not planned yet, maybe fortnightly meetings with GSC in the future.
  • Follow discussions asynchronously in GitHub: GitHub - tdwg/gbwg: Genomic Biodiversity Interest Group

Questions

  • Permit can be documented with GGBN’s permit extension
  • How to express degree of uncertainty of species identification based on eDNA data?
FAIRe checklist addressed it by: percentage identity, percentage query cover, quality of each stage, threshold for filtering based on errors. The TG is hoping to bring these terms into the extension.

Questions

  • GitHub for DwC DP testing - GitHub - gbif/dwc-dp-examples: Reference datasets for the DwC DP schemas
  • Coming public review related to DwC DP: Every existing DwC terms will also be in the public review because of the addition of semantics layer and that is a normative change. All terms will be labeled different family of use cases to ease navigation
  • Test publishing with IPT is already possible, but GBIF cannot ingest yet. They cannot commit until a stable version is available. Challenges includes identifiers and relationship between records
  • GBIF is looking into what kinds of views to be supported. Catalogs = views on a particular perspectives.
  • New terms from DwC-DP or even new extensions can be still added to Darwin Core Archive.
  • PostgreSQL 16 Database script to generate a (slightly modified) version of DWC DP: https://github.com/ben-norton/dwc-dp-transformation-utils/blob/main/output/pgsql/CREATE_dwc_dp_pg16.sql
  • In terms of timeline, if all goes well people can start using DwC-DP in January 2026. I suggest to invite John and GBIFS over to OBIS DCG to have a conversation to identify the overlap of publishing guide and examples that will be developed and explore how we can work effectively together.

  • TDWG infrastructure overview was given.
  • Workflow of translation of term list was extensively discussed. Automated translation is limited and can cause confusion. Domain-specific knowledge needs to be translated/proofread.
  • I asked about guidelines for missing values. It was mentioned that it is very challenging due to the many conventions out there, that’s why there isn’t one. This was mentioned by a participant: Appendix 3: Standard values for unknown information — DataCite Metadata Schema 4.6 documentation

Thank you @ymgan por sharing. I tried to attend the sensitive species information also but was to early for me.

@rubenperper you should look at the public review for the new DwC DP
